Answer | In order to add an airport to an existing Metropolitan Area the requesting airline will first need to obtain the approvals of all airports under that existing Metropolitan Area that they support the addition of the new airport to the Metropolitan Area. If the airline has obtained the approvals of all the airport authorities that they are in support of the request of the additional airport, then a location identifier application should be completed under the type “Metropolitan Area”. The application form can be obtained at the following link http://www.iata.org/services/Pages/codes.aspx Once the application is complete a new query should be logged on the IATA customer portal at www.iata.org/cs . In the query the application, plus all the airport approvals should be attached. If all the approvals are in order, IATA will then contact the airport authorities to obtain a list of all airlines conducting scheduled operations to their airports in the last 12 months. Those airlines will be polled for their support of the addition. If the majority of responding airlines are in favor the airport will be added with an established effective date. |
